Tips for Moving House
With a Toddler
home moving articles and tips
Moving house is hard enough, but if you have a new-born baby or toddler in tow, the process can be so much more stressful! It is true that doing anything when you have toddler everything you do is that much harder and trickier, but house relocation really can take its toll! So if you’re embarking on a house move with your little angel, here a few tips that might ease the process slightly, if not rather significantly!
During any relocation process you’ll want to make sure you’ve got snacks handy so you can replenish those quickly depleting energy levels. However this is complicated slightly when you have a toddler, who needs proper nutrition. So why not stock up on things like fruit, applesauce and some frozen vegetables, which are easy to heat up as soon as you move into your new home and also means you won’t have to search for those kitchen pots and pans on your first night! You can make moving fun for your toddler by eating your first meal on the floor in your living room! Lay down a blanket and have a move in day picnic! Your child is sure to love the novelty of this.
With a moving checklist and so many boxes to unpack you may be wondering when you’ll get a minute to sort through all that mess! Well the best thing to do once the movers have done their job is to get stuck into unpacking, but remember to take short and frequent breaks and give your toddler some attention. If however you have friends or family willing to help out, why not ask if they can babysit for an afternoon and really try and get the bulk of unpacking done in that time!
Keep you toddler occupied while you get down to that back breaking work of moving furniture by giving them a new toy! Kids love new toys and while your toddler is busy entertaining him or herself you can get on with all that gruelling work that comes with house removals. A positive aspect to having a lively toddler is that they often wear themselves out and need to take naps. So when your toddler is napping, take the opportunity either have a tea break yourself or finish unloading the moving van. You might even take this time to square up with your moving company (if you’ve hired one). If you’ve gone for the cheap removals option and hired your own removal van then why not make sure you’re unloaded all your belongings!
Now on the actual moving day you’re best bet is to schedule the arrival of the house movers at a time when your toddler is napping, or invite grandma round instead to entertain your child while the removal service gets on with loading the vehicle. Don’t pack up all your toddler’s toys… leave some of his favourite items which will surely keep him/her happy for hours on end while your moving company gets on with the task at hand! Planning ahead is imperative when you have a toddler, as you’ll want your relocation to go as smoothly as possible.
Just like anyone, toddlers can be affected by a house move, so it’s important to explain that you’re moving to a new dwelling. You can really make the move an exciting time for your toddler, particularly by showing them the removal van!
When it comes to unpacking, why not get your toddler’s room done and dusted to begin with. That way your toddler will have a familiar environment filled with their own toys, furniture etc, making them feel at home. This also means the cot is all set up for when your toddler wants to take that nap!
