Take this 1 month for the move to get things ready so that you can pack quickly and discard items you don't need.

You should segment your household items into 3 areas:

1. items to pack and move on the truck
2. items that you will move yourself
3. items that will be discarded

Other tips:

• start using up food and other perishables. The less you have to pack-throw away, the better.
• clean rugs, draperies, and clothes so that they can be wrapped and transported:

• arrange pickup and delivery dates with your mover and storage operator. Reserve if necessary your use of the elevator if moving from and/or to another apartment

Taking Care of Finances and Other Documents

Finance Tips:

• Check your credit report to clean up discrepancies and prevent ID theft (especially
  as you move to different addresses)
• Make sure you re-check your report 3 months after your move to update your credit records:
  complete information at our credit center
• Setup your new bank account with deposit accounts and bank card access:
  search banks in your area
• Close safe deposit boxes and transfer records and assets to your new bank
• Make sure you have adequate insurance coverage:

• Pay any unpaid traffic tickets, claims, and taxes. Outstanding "penalties" can delay registrations in other jurisdictions.

Other important documents:

• Contact your existing dentist, doctor, veterinary and other health care facilities. Have them transfer your personal, family, and pet records to your new health care specialist. Note that you may need to provide a signed letter for transfer authorization
• Arrange transfer of your children's school records
• Transfer memberships in religious, civic groups and other social clubs
• Obtain other records from lawyers, CPAs, investment advisors, others
• Check the local and state laws of your new city on home businesses, business licenses, professional tests, and other requirements that may be applicable
