Moving as a Student
home moving articles and tips
If you are studying at university, then you are more than likely to need to get various personal belongings and items transported to your new area of residence. Moving from home to a big city is itself a challenge, but you don’t want the extra problem of being ill prepared. Fresher’s Angels will often be available to help and assist you , but as a second year and beyond . You need to factor in travelling methods. Will you be taking your car with you and if so is it properly insured and has the boot space required? Are your parents able to help you with the move; are they free before your term starts, and does the car have enough space for your belongings?
If you choose to go with a removal service instead of getting a friend of family member to help you out, then you need to be aware of personal security as well. Phishing scams (which use personal details to hack your bank account) and other ruses can occur over the Internet through false email accounts and so on. Be careful to double check the company if possible. Don’t give out personal details over the Internet or by phone, because of personal security, and make sure you have thoroughly read the terms and conditions and made sure you are happy with them, before you sign off on them. Watch out for hidden costs that aren’t included in original overheads.
As a student you are responsible for getting you and your possessions to your place of residence at university (you’re an adult now, so unfortunately have to act like one!). Work out suitable insurance to go with the possessions you are taking with you; if possible, check with your parents and home insurance providers about in transit and when left at home. There are many suitable options for insurance with student specific insurers. The last thing you want on your mind is a laptop going missing or something else that is just as vital and expensive.
And as a student, your move will be a little different to families moving, due to your situation. For each year of studying, you will have different demands and requirements which impact hugely on your living situation. As an undergraduate in first year, you will most likely be in halls of residence. In second year you will probably be living in a flat with friends, as for third year. And as a post-graduate, you can choose to live on campus or rent by yourself.
These factor into the move itself because you need to think about living arrangements; amount of space and importance of items taken with you. When living with friends and renting a shared apartment as a second year, you should have slightly more room than that of rented accommodation on campus.
The university website should provide references or other sites that will tell you the size of the room you will be living in and further details. Obviously a smaller sized room is going to provide with less room, meaning you need to be more careful with your packing.
The temptation is always to take too much (almost including the kitchen sink!), so you need to prioritise and slim down the entire luggage you intend to take with you. With this in mind, you can purchase extras when you move; tooth paste, brushes, food and cooking tools! Library loans can turn out to be very useful as you make sure of short term loans for books that can be returned (therefore saving you more room than if pre-bought!).
