Finding a Great
Moving Company

home moving articles and tips

  1. When you are looking for a moving company, don’t go straight for the internet! Ask your family and friends about who they have used in the past for a more personal recommendation. Many man and van drivers do not advertise, as they don’t like having their phone number out there on the internet. The reality of the situation is that moving companies that are well respected get passed around between happy customers, and they don’t need to advertise on the web! So, ask about to see if your mates have any one that they use regularly.
  2. If you can’t find a personal recommendation, then try looking in places that are off the beaten track. Go to your local furniture place and ask if they use a certain service. The notice board at your local community centre, or even music space will likely have adverts for a man and van as well. Finding adverts like cads in a shop window shows you that this individual has gone out and made an effort to get their name about. You know that they are keen to work, and keen to work hard.
  3. Gumtree adverts are so easy to make, that you never know what you are going to end up with! You can find good van drivers on there, but you can also get conmen and scammers, so it is sometimes best to avoid it if you can.
  4. Looking at adverts on the internet, you will likely find two types of drivers. One who offers an hourly rate, and another who wants to give you a quote. If you are well aware of how long the journey should take, then an hourly rate will be a lot cheaper than the quote. You need to know that you are not going to get stuck in traffic if this happens however, as any sort of inconvenience will drive the price of the job up. There can be nothing worse than sitting in traffic knowing that you are paying for the time in which you are getting nothing done! Have a look at local traffic reports in the week leading up to the job, and see if you can work out traffic free shortcuts to ensure that your move goes well.
  5. Having a quote will protect you from incidents where you waste time, as mentioned above. You should know however that the driver will be protecting themselves against these sorts of issues happening, by simply charging you an exaggerated quote. Therefore, you are sort of risk free, but in fact it is more likely that you are in a position where you are paying more than you would be if things went well, and just as much as if they went badly. It is of course up to you however.
  6. There are scammers out there in both fields, so be careful as to how you approach things. If an advert seems too good to be true, then perhaps it is? If one advertises an hourly rate of a lot less than everyone else, then look closer. You may well find that they are actually only advertising a low price for a lessened service. Some drivers offer a low price just to drive; they will not help you to move anything, and will charge extra if you want them to.
  7. Certain drivers may offer you a quote and then ask for more when they arrive and you are in less of a position to argue, so make sure that you describe your load accurately!
