How Protected is Your
Domestic Removal?

home moving articles and tips

There are so many things to sort out when you are planning a removal, that you will not be surprised to hear that there are a tone of things that can go wrong! If you are in a position where money is not to be wasted (as most people are!) then you will be wanting to ensure that you are protected against any issues that may arise, whether out of your control or otherwise!

The fact of the matter is however, that insurance and waivers will cost you money in the first place, and given the way in which they are designed, can rack up to be rather expensive, especially given that they protect against something that should not really happen in the first place! Have a look over the following few types of removals protection to see how you feel about them when it comes to covering your domestic removal.

Late exchanges can be a serious spanner in the works in that they prevent you from booking your removals company in advance of your exchange. The idea that the date set for the exchange may well change at the last minute will mean that you can’t book the removals company in confidence, as the change in date will lead to your deposit being wasted.

In order to prevent this problem, some removals companies have set up ‘late exchange waivers’ that save your place for a certain number of days for a certain percentage of the full price. This means that you avoid losing the full deposit if your day changes, whilst also reserving the company for a number of day, to spread your bet as it were. This guarantee will mean that the company could lose out if another client approaches them for a job on the days that you are looking  to move, and for this reason, not all removals companies offer such protection.

Waiting times can be the kind of thing that will really ruin your removal, as they are often completely unforeseen; hence the waiting! You will find that no matter how prepared you are, you can be held up at the last minute by issues like bank transfers taking too long, or clerical errors along the intricate chain of people who need to pay and be paid before you are clear and free to get the keys. If this does get delayed, then you will find that you can get in to some serious trouble, the time that is spent idling by the removals company will be charged as extra work, as they have upheld their end of the deal, but are being made to work longer by an issue form your end.

In order to counter this, it is well worth asking about waiting times charges, and whether the removals companies that you are talking to will offer you a covering charge, so that you pay a small amount to avoid paying any waiting time fees should they happen.

Insurance on your items whilst they are in transit will often only be available if the removals company have packed the items themselves. Whilst some may view this as a way to scam people into buying packing services, there is a strong case for it, given that once the boxes have been taped shut, the state of the contents are a mystery, so the company have no idea whether breakages that happen are your fault or theirs, which of course throws in to debate the whole notion of who should pay for the damage!
